A buyer's guide — what to choose, how much to buy, and how to check what actually arrives.
Most people ask this question expecting a brand name.
The brand is the smallest part of the answer. There are four decisions to make before you get to it, and getting those right matters far more than which name is stamped on the bar.
Here they are, in the order you'll face them.
The short answer, first
For a normal house in and around Bikaner — ground plus one or two floors — Fe 500D is the right choice.
If you read nothing else, that's the line to remember. Here's why it's the answer, and what else you need to decide.
Decision 1: The grade
Every TMT bar sold in India carries a grade stamped on it. You'll see these:
Fe 415 — the older, softer grade. Still available, still legal, but largely superseded. Bends easily, which contractors like. Weaker, which means you need more of it.
Fe 500 — the default across most of India. A good balance of strength and workability.
Fe 500D — the same strength as Fe 500, but the "D" stands for ductile. A ductile bar stretches noticeably before it breaks instead of snapping cleanly. In an earthquake, that stretch is the difference between a building that cracks and warns you, and one that fails without notice.
Fe 550 / Fe 600 — stronger still, and less forgiving to bend. These belong in high-rises and industrial structures. For a house, the extra strength buys you very little and the reduced ductility works against you.
Why Fe 500D for Bikaner. Bikaner sits in Seismic Zone III on the national map — moderate risk, not negligible. Zone III is exactly where the ductile grade earns its price. The cost difference over plain Fe 500 is small, usually a few hundred rupees per tonne. For a house you intend to live in for thirty years, it is the easiest yes on this list.
Decision 2: Do you need corrosion-resistant bars?
You'll be offered CRS bars — corrosion-resistant steel — at a premium.
For most Bikaner sites, no.
CRS earns its cost where the air is salty or the ground water is aggressive: coastal belts, high-humidity regions, chemical plant surroundings. Bikaner is dry, inland, and low-humidity for most of the year. Ordinary Fe 500D with proper concrete cover will outlast you.
Two exceptions worth checking:
- If your plot has known saline or brackish groundwater — parts of the region do — and you're building basements, footings or anything in prolonged contact with that soil, ask your engineer specifically.
- If you're building near a treatment plant or an industrial discharge line, ask.
Otherwise, spend the difference on better concrete cover and honest curing. Both do more for corrosion than the steel grade does.
Decision 3: The brand — what it actually buys you
Here's the part nobody says plainly.
Every BIS-certified Fe 500D bar, whichever company made it, has to meet the same national standard. Same minimum strength. Same minimum stretch before failure. Same limits on the impurities in the steel. A bar that clears certification is, on paper, the same product.
So what does paying more for a known brand actually get you?
Consistency. Large primary producers roll from their own steel with tighter process control. Batch to batch, the bars behave the same way. Smaller re-rolling mills — often working from scrap billets — vary more, and the variation is invisible until it isn't.
Confidence that it's genuine. Counterfeit rolling marks exist. Buying through an established supply chain, from a dealer who can show you the source, removes a category of risk you cannot inspect your way out of.
Availability when you need it. A shortage mid-slab is a real cost. Consistent stock matters more than most people expect until it happens to them.
What it does not buy you is a fundamentally stronger bar. Anyone claiming their Fe 500D is meaningfully stronger than another certified Fe 500D is describing marketing, not metallurgy.
The practical rule: choose a primary producer over a secondary re-rolling mill. Among the primary producers, pick on price, availability and who you trust to stand behind a delivery. Don't agonise over it.
Decision 4: How much do you actually need?
A rough sanity-check for a standard residential frame — columns, beams, slabs — is around 3.5 to 4.5 kg of steel per square foot of built-up area.
Treat that as a way to catch a wildly wrong quotation, not as an order quantity. Real consumption depends on your span lengths, column spacing, number of floors and your engineer's detailing. A house with long unsupported spans will eat considerably more.
Get the bar bending schedule from whoever drew your structure, and order against that. If you don't have one, ask for one. It is the single document that prevents both over-ordering and mid-pour panic.
How to check what arrives
This is where a homeowner can genuinely protect themselves, and it takes ten minutes.
Read the bar. Every genuine bar has the manufacturer's mark and the grade rolled into the surface, repeating along its length. Not printed. Not on a sticker. Rolled in. Run your hand along it and find them.
Check the bundle tag. It should carry the grade, diameter, heat or batch number, and the manufacturer's name. Keep these tags until the structure is done.
Weigh a bar. This is the one that catches the most common problem. Steel is sold by weight, and an under-rolled bar of the correct-looking diameter is the oldest trick in the trade. A one-metre length should weigh close to:

Beyond that, it isn't within spec. Weigh three or four bars from a delivery, not one.
Look at the ribs. They should be uniform and sharp along the whole length. Faded, uneven or missing ribs in patches mean poor rolling, and the ribs are what grip the concrete.
About rust
Bars will develop a light brown film on site. This worries people more than it should.
Light surface rust that rubs off with a wire brush or a cloth is fine. It does no harm and slightly improves the bond with concrete.
Flaky rust that lifts off in scales, or pitting that leaves visible dents in the surface, is not fine. That bar has lost section. Reject it.
To keep bars in the first category rather than the second: stack them clear of the ground on wooden sleepers or a raised bed, don't leave them lying in standing water, and cover them if they'll sit through a monsoon spell. Bare earth contact is what does the damage, not the open air.
The short version
Fe 500D. Skip CRS unless your ground water says otherwise. Choose a primary producer and stop worrying about which one. Order against a bar bending schedule, not a thumb rule. Weigh what arrives.
That's the whole decision.
