How to Check Cement Quality at Home

And, more importantly, what these tests can't tell you.


Search this question and you'll find the same list on twenty different websites. Float a handful on water. Smell it. Put your hand in the bag. Rub it between your fingers.

Those tests are real. They work. But they are worth doing only if you understand what they actually measure — because none of them measure the one thing that decides whether your slab holds for the next forty years.

So here is the honest version.


What a home test can tell you

A five-minute check at your gate can catch three things:

  1. Cement that has absorbed moisture and lost strength in storage.
  2. Cement that has been adulterated — sand, ash or filler mixed in.
  3. Cement that is simply too old to perform the way its grade claims.

That's a meaningful list. Most cement problems on a small residential site come from one of these three, not from a manufacturing defect. Catching them at delivery costs you nothing.

What a home test cannot tell you

Compressive strength.

When a bag says 43 grade, it means the cement should reach 43 MPa in a standard cube test at 28 days. There is no way to verify that with your hands, a bucket, or a glass plate. It requires cubes cast under controlled conditions, cured for 28 days, and crushed in a compression testing machine at a lab.

Anyone who tells you that a floating handful proves 53 grade is selling you comfort, not information.

So: use the home tests as a screen. Use the printed markings, the date, and your storage discipline as the real quality control.


Part 1: Before you open the bag

This is the part most people skip, and it's the part that matters most.

The IS 269 mark. Since 2015, all grades of Ordinary Portland Cement — 33, 43 and 53 — fall under a single standard, IS 269:2015. The earlier separate codes (IS 8112 for 43 grade, IS 12269 for 53 grade) were merged into it and withdrawn. So a current OPC bag should carry the IS 269 mark with the ISI monogram and a BIS licence number, and separately state the grade. PPC carries IS 1489 (Part 1). A bag that shows the old code alone is not automatically fake — but it is worth a question.

The week and year of manufacture. Printed on every bag. Cement is not wine. Stored in bags, it loses roughly 20% of its strength in three months, and continues to drop from there. Use cement within three months of manufacture where you can. Beyond six months, treat it as a downgrade — fine for a boundary wall, not for a column.

The seal. Intact stitching, no re-stitched seams, no patched tears, no damp staining or hardened patches at the corners.

The weight. A standard bag is 50 kg. Weigh two or three from a load. Occasional variation is normal. A consistent shortfall across a delivery is a conversation to have.


Part 2: The five-minute checks

Do these on a fresh bag, in the shade, on a dry day.

Colour. Uniform greenish-grey. Streaks, patches of brown, or a distinctly lighter shade in one part of the bag suggest either contamination or moisture ingress.

Temperature. Push your hand deep into the bag. It should feel cool. Warmth means hydration has already begun inside the bag — that cement has taken in moisture and is on its way out.

Texture. Take a pinch and rub it between thumb and forefinger. It should feel smooth and slippery, almost like fine talc. Grittiness means something coarse has been mixed in. This is the most useful of the touch tests, and the least often done properly.

Lumps. Push through the bag by hand. Soft lumps that collapse to powder under light pressure are usually just settled cement — acceptable. Hard lumps that resist crushing are set cement. Reject the bag; that material will never reach its rated strength.

The float test — with a caveat. Sprinkle a small handful onto a bucket of water. Good cement, being very fine, tends to sit on the surface for a moment before sinking. Coarse adulterants drop straight down. This is genuinely useful for spotting crude adulteration and genuinely useless for anything subtler. Treat a pass as "nothing obviously wrong," not as proof of quality.


Part 3: The overnight check

If you want one test with a bit more substance, do this before a major pour.

Mix about 100 grams of cement with enough water to make a stiff paste. Shape it into a small cake roughly 25 mm thick on a clean glass plate or tile. Leave it 24 hours submerged in water.

The next day it should be firm, hold its shape, and show no cracks. Cracks or a soft, crumbling cake point to a bad batch or an adulterated one.

For reference, OPC under IS 269 must not begin setting before 30 minutes and must be fully set within 10 hours. If your paste is stiffening within minutes, or still soft hours later, something is wrong.


Part 4: The part nobody blames — storage

Here is an uncomfortable truth about building in Bikaner: more cement is ruined on site than is ever sold bad.

A bag sitting on bare ground under a tarp through a monsoon week will fail every test above — and the supplier will get the blame. So:

  • Store indoors, on a raised platform, at least 150–200 mm clear of the floor and away from outer walls.
  • Stack no more than 10 bags high. Beyond that, the bags at the bottom compact into lumps under pressure.
  • Cover with plastic sheeting, but keep air moving — a sealed tarp in the heat traps condensation.
  • Use oldest first. Every time. Order the stack by delivery date so it's obvious.
  • Order in phases matched to your pour schedule instead of buying the whole house's requirement in one go for a slightly better rate. That discount is usually smaller than the strength you lose.

When you should actually go to a lab

For a normal single-family house, if the bag markings are correct, the date is recent, the seal is intact and the touch tests pass — that's proportionate care.

Go further when:

  • You're pouring columns, beams or a slab for a structure of more than two floors.
  • You've bought a large quantity in one lot and it will sit for weeks.
  • Something in the five-minute checks didn't sit right.

In those cases, ask for the manufacturer's test certificate for that batch, and cast cubes at the pour for a 28-day test. A cube test costs a few hundred rupees. A weak slab costs considerably more.


The short version

Read the bag. Check the date. Feel the powder. Store it properly. Use it soon.

The rest is arithmetic best left to a lab.
